A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association showed that pregnant women with polycystic ovary syndrome are at a significantly increased risk of experiencing cardiac complications during and after delivery. The study found that PCOS was linked with an increased risk of heart failure, weakened heart, and the development of blood clots by 76%, 79%, and 82%, respectively. It was also observed that women with PCOS had a longer hospital stay duration in comparison to women without PCOS (3 vs 2 days).

Dr. Valerie Baker, MD, stated that lifestyle management before, during, and after pregnancy can help to prevent the onset of the long-term effects of cardiac complications. She also added that if a woman with PCOS is screened for an increased risk of cardiac complications, the foundational approach should be lifestyle management followed by statin therapy. Lifestyle interventions should include dietary management and physical activity.
